Hi Leslie,
My chis are both good with kids ... but we all have met the "kid" that
will persue a small dog until they catch one, and hopefully yours have been
around dogs enough that they aren't that kind. Around that kind, we hold
our dogs, or have a friend hold a dog each if we can't and keep them out of
reach ... or as a last resort, put them in their xpen for the duration of
the visit. My little girl is less than 3 pounds and I don't want her being
grabbed at. However, with children who have good manners, both chis will
jump right into little kids laps for loving. If a child is harassing them,
Elsa will drive them away by licking them in the face until they loose
interest, Bessie will avoid them, or let herself out the dog door. So,
mainly it's her I have to watch if kids get pestery. Our son is 2 and 1/2,
and our dogs are 6, so he's grown up around them. Mostly he's the good kind
of kid around the dogs, but occasionally he turns into the other kind, and
we have to kennel them in their xpen for their peace of mind.
Just FYI, our breeder also bred Rotties, and she did exactly what you are
describing, and had it all under control until one time when she went out of
town and one of her teenage kids made a mistake and didn't make sure all of
the chis were in before letting the Rotties out and one of the Rotties
killed one of her chis. She was just heartbroken about it. If an accident
happens, it won't be anyone's fault, just an accident, but it won't be fun
for anyone either.

My husband has figured out how to avoid all scenarios possible between
the dogs. We have 2 small kids, ages 2 and 4, I personally have more
issues being worried about a chi biting my kids than I do my pit
bulls. Does anyone have any that are good with kids. I am a member
of a couple of pit bull groups, and everyone there seems to harbor
grudges against chi's. I just want facts. Will a chi be good with my
kids? Are chi's good dogs with other people and strangers. Our pits
have a pen outside, and when they're inside we've decided to "rotate"
rooms so they're separated when they're inside. Of course the chi
would be permanantly inside. Does anyone have one that is litter
trained? how exactly to you litter train one anyway?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Leslie
