Hi Shell and thank you for the welcome and the info!. I never knew about the
undercoat or that some chi's have and don't have them. Sophie, my 3 yr old
chi, is a smooth coat and best I can tell she doesn't have an undercoat. She
seems to be the same as your babies- (they are soo sweet looking), very thin
to no hair from her chest to her belly and inside her legs. Matter of fact I
can see all of her freckles! LOL. Chiquita has hair on her chest and all the
way to her tummy, which is bare. Her coat hair is fine and seems to be long
strands to the skin. Is it too early to tell if she'll have an undercoat or
not since she's so young? I'm trying to load some pics of both Sophie &
Chiquita but find I gotta clean up old pics off the camera since it's taking
forever to load!

Hi Rose,
Welcome to the group! I have short haired chis without an undercoat ... so
I have no idea about her coat ... I would just see what the vet says on
Wednesday since she seems happy and healthy.
You will notice looking at pictures of chis some have undercoats and some
don't. Some short hairs have thick, dense fur all over (the ones with an
undercoat), and the ones without the undercoat have shorter, finer hair -
almost none on their tummies and chest. Same with the long hairs - the ones
with an undercoat have very thick and long hair all over. The ones without an
undercoat have more of a fine medium length hair, with longer hair on their
ears and tails. Mine will shed, not so you see hair around, but their tummies
end up almost bald in the summer, then they have more hair in the winter on
their tummies - LOL! I'll attach a picture of them. If you look at their
chests and tummy areas that you can see, you'll notice you can see their skin
through their hair (it was taken in August - they're not that bald yet right
now).

really starting to thin out. Is she losing her "puppy" coat? I
thought this would happen when she's a little older. She's not
scratching and her skin looks healthy with no flakes; has good appetite
and PLENTY of energy! Have a vet appt for her this Weds for her last
shots, but I'm starting to worry about her.
