i also wanted to add in here something i didnt add in earlier. I believe with
all my heart and soul that there is a loving caring God and that His son died
on the cross for me, but theres no scientific evidence of that either, so who
am i to tell you what not to believe.
Blessings,
  Heather

i had heard this theory on chihuahuas and illness several times and
decided to research it. it is sadly just an old wives tale and there is no
scientific evidence to say otherwise. i'm not usually one to dispute a friends
beliefs because in my opinion if you believe a puppy has helped you physically
in anyway, chances are youve convinced your body of that and it begins to feel
better. so, if this is a 'theory' you choose to beleive, i wont tell you not
to, but i also wouldnt suggest running out and buying a chihuahua for your sick
child because it might 'cure' him. chihuahuas are not hypo-allergenic dogs and
bringing one home to someone with asthma and allergies could make the person
worse. here is a quote from DHWebsite that says alittle about it. i was
hoping to find a little more, but i'm short on time. here is also the link to
that page.. http://www.healthypups.com/page10.html it also talks about the
dangers of breeding chihuahuas too small...like
the 1 pound adult someone saw at the park. anyway, Gods blessings and forgive
me if i offend anyone, Heather

"Many people are also attracted to Chihuahuas because they have heard that
Chihuahuas are good for people with asthma and allergies. This is simply not
true in my opinion. It is true that a small dog will contribute fewer
allergens to the indoor environment than a larger dog. It is common for dogs
that are too small to have asthma and allergies just like humans do. As
Chihuahuas were bred to be smaller, the health problems began to increase.
There were times when a Chihuahua puppy came home and had an allergic reaction
to a new environment at the same time a child was naturally outgrowing his
asthma or allergies. Grandma assumed the dog had taken the child's sickness
away, since the puppy got sick at about the same time the child got better!
There is absolutely no scientific evidence that anything like this has ever
happened, although studies suggest that having a pet as a child may help build
the human immune system and reduce the chances of having allergies later
in adult life! A hairless breed is the only breed that is proven less likely
to bother humans with asthma and allergies."
