I have been fighting this problem since Mar on my little girl Penny. I
tried the oil first....then 3 different ear mite medicines....and
everything else I could think of. Then I looked up ear yeast infection
on the net and found using a diluted vinegar solution. So far, 1
week....it's working good. She still has brown goop, but hasn't been
shaking and scratching as much. But I read that it can take anywhere
from 3 months to a year to get rid of it. It calls for 1 teaspoon to 1
gal of water, but I didn't make that much. I filled a small bottle,
about 10 oz and put just a little vinegar in it. About a 1/4 teaspoon of
vinegar. Then fill the ear canal, rub it around from outside, let them
shake and wipe with cotton ball. I sure hope it works.....I've tried
everything. But if not I'll call the vet for the tresaderm. Oh
wait.....just looked it up on net and here it is:
http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsearch?catalog=entirelypets&query=tresaderm&.autodone=http%3A%2F%2Fstore.yahoo.com%2Fentirelypets%2Fnsearch.html&x=19&y=12
haven't checked to see if this is lowest price yet but I get a lot of
stuff from Entirely Pets.....they r the cheapest for Frontline, that I
have found. So I will just order it from there if I have to.
"Mel", TY for the heads up on the tresaderm!

It could be ear mites, you can try putting a few drops of mineral oil
or vegetable oil in there and rubbing it around and then let the dog
shake it out, the oil drowns the mites. Mites have a life cycle of 3
weeks though. I am having the same thing with a new cat I just got. I
have known since I was young that mineral oil was the treatment for
mites. If it doesn't clear up then you probably have a yeast or
bacterial infection. You can also get ear mite stuff at the pet store.
The important thing is to massage it into the dogs ears from the
outside, until you hear it making a gushy sound, then let it shake it
out, that should get the dark goopy stuff out, clean the rest up with
cotton balls, not cotton swabs. If you have a cat or other dog you
have to treat them too.
I had heard that Chihuahuas do have ear problems and one way to
prevent it is to get more than one because they clean each others ears
and mine are both almost a year old and I haven't had a problem yet.

My chi's ears are stinky too! I would like to know what to
use. I have tried
rubbing alcohol on a qtip and carefully cleaned it.
