Excessive thirst and urination is a sign - if there is too much sugar in the blood (human or dog, it's all the same) nature gives them the urge to drink in order to flush it out, and then they pee. My daughter was 11 when she came home from school crying because she had gotten detention for leaving class to go to the bathroom. She had been doing it too frequently the past week so the teacher had refused to let her - she'd walked out anyway rather than wet herself and ended up in detention. I knew the signs and kept her home from school to take her to the doctor the next morning. She is now 20 and has been a diabetic for 9 years.
