  Most Vets I have known will not inject a pet directly into the heart with the 
owners standing there. They use the vein on the leg. If the pets circulatory 
system is very poor then that might be the reason to  have  to go directly to 
the heart.
  When I worked for a vet the only time he did it was when the owners were not 
around.. Its a little faster, but from watching I would say more traumatic in 
my own opinion
