I've missed any prior postings and Marsha didn't include any prior postings in
hers so please excuse me if this is repetative.

I have 5 dogs that I have rescued over the past few years. We own a
shepherd/collie mix, a cocker mix, a shiba inu, a chihuahua and a chinese
crested. We have 5 dishes that we keep filled with Iams food all the time. They
don't fight over food and eat out of which ever bowl is more convenient to them
at the time they are hungry. I always come home to bowls that are still half
full at the end of the day. They have learned to eat till they are full and not
to eat so the other dogs can't have it. They go in the kitchen when they are
hungry but usually they wait for us to eat our food and then they eat theirs.
My chinese crested and chihuahua have learned that if they come to me and bark,
mom will give them a treat. Or should I say they have taught mom that when they
come to me and bark that means I want an alpo snap. And boy they all know the
word treat.

Not all of my dogs like canned food and its not economical to feed large dogs
canned food anyway so there is no reason why I can't leave their food out.

They are like kids though. If one bowl is empty and another is still somewhat
full, they have to come and check out what mom put in the empty bowl to make
sure it's not something new. If it is they want the new stuff and not the old
and will switch bowls.

Due to my short time right now, I don't have time to reply to each
individual post response to my post regarding free feeding, but I did want to
add that I do understand about those who cant free feed due to the fact that
their chis are rescues, ect....but that is kinda what I was talking
about....since they were not free fed from the beginning, they have lost that
ability to regulate their food intake....that is what I meant by free feeding
from weaning on....that way they learn....but it is nearly impossible to begin
free feeding once they have already been fed on schedules......which is why I
recommend free feeding for puppies.....to get them use to it.
