As one who volunteers with a shelter, I couldn't agree with you more. After the things we see, anytime someone tells me they're a breeder, I just automatically assume they're a puppy mill. A backyard breeder isn't any different.
A friend who had dobermans once told me that you breed to better the breed. She spent tons of money having her dogs tested for all the problems associated with dobermans before she bred them, and she only bred a couple of times over the years.
