Hi Beth:
I think I might be able to help with some advice for a few of your questions.
I am also a fairly new chi mommy. I have a 5lb male that is a year and a half
and a 3lb female that is about 9 mos (they are biological brother and sister,
but from different litters). So, needless to say, I just went through all of
these puppy phases. So here are some of my experiences.....
Ears: As far as the ears are concerened they will start to stand
up. My males ears layed flat until he was about 8 mos, then they began to
stand up regularly. Now his ears dont lay flat unless he's sleepy or has just
woken up. lol. Does he stand them up if something catches his attention? That
(his ear movement) will be a good indication of his moods for the first few
months also. But I must warn you that my female is 9 mos and her ears rarely
stand up right. She is a few lbs smaller and has progressed slower than the
male did so I'm not sure if that could possibly be a female trait or not.
Potty training: both of mine preferred the carpet over the tile or
wood. This was very frustrating throught the training process. I started to
notice that when they were on the tile or wood floors they walked different and
even shivered a little more. I began to think this had something to do with
how much colder those floors can tend to be on the surface as well as slick and
hard for such little feet to gain traction on. Therefore, I believe the
resistence to those types of floors is b/c of how uncomfortable those are
naturally for the dogs, whereas carpet is a natural cushion of sorts. I have
also had issues with my dogs not wanting to use the restroom outside if the
ground is too cold or even wet. They are so low to the ground that this really
does make a difference in their comfort levels.
Apparel: Ok...this is my favorite question to answer. I shop, um
daily, online for apparel for my chis. I even dressed them up as hugh heffner
and a playgirl for halloween this year (oh yeah, I found a hugh heffner robe
for dogs!). I do a lot of searching and shopping on ebay, but I also frequent
some websites that can even make personalized clothing. Here is a list of a
few websites you might like:
thepuppyshop.com
littlepamperedpets.com
doggiedesign.com
designerdogwear.com
funnyfur.com
championdogclothes.com
hottydog.com
Sports apparel sites: thatpetplace.com
doggienation.com
For sports apparel it would also be good to check with your local pet stores,
chain and non-franchised, because they usually carry the teams specific to your
local area. Also, checking with the official site of the team you are looking
for is helpful too, although the smallest size, at most places, is a little
large for our chis. Either way, if you are just looking for a baseball or
football 'style' shirt then your local petco, petsmart, etc. should be the most
helpful.
I hope all of this crazy information was helpful.......If you have anymore
questions, concerns or comments please feel free to reply. Good luck!

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Chi Puppy Questions
I am a new mommy to an 8 week old chi puppy. He is the cutest thing
ever! I do have a few questions and don't really know where to go to
get answers, so this seems like a great place to start!
1. Bud has floppy ears now, will they always be floppy or will they
eventually stand up?
2. He is pretty much paper trained but he piddles one or two drops on
the carpet only, not on the tile or the wood floor, any ideas why?
3. I am looking for a little football/baseball jersey for him because
it is still kind of cold here, is there a good place to look for one
online?
Once I can get a good picture of him, I will try to post it here for
all of you to see...he really is one of the cutest chihuahua puppies I
have ever seen. Maybe I am a LITTLE biased!
Thanks for your help,
Beth
