They don't do the surgeries in the ER, they will call your doctor and they will come in and do the surgery on the surgical floor. If you don't have a doctor then they will call one in to do it. ER doctors rarely do surgery. They are not skilled enough.
I wonder if it has to do with the difference in health care plans? I know if I was in a life and death situation I would not want an ER doctor operating on me. When you are in an attack there is an infamatory process going on and they won't do surgery while that is happening. They will treat you and when you are well they do the surgery. Being agoraphobic, I can't get to a doctor (I haven't seen a doctor in many years). The only way I can think of to get my gall bladder removed is to show up at the ER during a gall bladder attack and HOPE they will do the surgery right then. Plus, I have to do this on my own. I have to work up enough courage to leave my home for the first time in over 10 years, actually get in the ambulance, go to the hospital, and let so many strangers touch me. NO ONE has touched me in many, many years. ALL of these things I have to do scare me senseless. Even so, after 11 years of gall bladder attacks, I MUST gather everything inside me and get to the hospital. However, there's a chance they won't do the surgery - that they will simply refer me to a doctor and send me back home. I PRAY they don't, but they might.
