Ky's 4-H does have dog catagories and the state fair is full of these. In
all honesty, there is a lot of misinformation regarding 4-H. I was very
active in 4-H...was club president at high school. I personally never
participated in any of the agricultural competitions...I was more into the
speech competition (went to state!) But 4-H is mostly an agricultural
program...it is a lot like FFA in that it teaches the basics of farming
among other things.....it also teaching homemaking, ect....but it geared
tward preserving the rural lifestyle. And yes, teaching RESPONSIBLE animal
reproduction is a BIG part of the program. But, I don't think it is fair
to assume that just because a 4-Her has chosen a dog for their project,
that they are unethical. 4-H does not just raise an animal and then be
done with it...it is all about teaching the proper reproduction of animals
as well as the lifelong care of that animal. Most likely scenario, this
child has already invested a lot more time and energy into researching the
breeding of dogs than most breeders do before they get started. If the
child's parent is already a breeder, then it is logical that the child
would choose a rout for which he already has some experience.

I am a breeder and if my son or daughter were to need a breeding project,
I would not have no problem with them choosing to go the chi rout. Do not
think that just because they are doing it in conjuntion with a 4-H
project, that they are automatically just being unethical...like I said,
they have probably put much more thought into it than your average new
breeder does.....
