I couldn't agree more. But the AKC has been under fire on this subject for years and has never done anything about it. The AKC is a very closed knit group. It also is a money making machine. It seems to me that it is the voice of us little people that have and continue to make a difference, and not the big corps who only see their wallets.

I do not know much about the AKC or the others that register dogs, but if it was possible that the AKC & UKC? would NOT register dogs from the PM's this also will cut down PM's if the dogs could not be REG! I think the AKC should also take a stand against PM's and help keep them from being REG. any opinions? shanna --- On Fri, 10/29/10, Peggy & The Girls <[email protected]> wrote: From: Peggy & The Girls <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] Puppy Mill Auction-Hundreds need our help To: [email protected] Date: Friday, October 29, 2010, 12:30 AM I know, I feel the same way when I see a puppy in a store. It kills me and the twist on this is that they need to be saved too. The pet shops here that stopped selling dogs finally sold them when they where 6-8 months old too for only 200.00 just to get rid of them. The pet shops are really stupid, because it cost them more money to keep those pups for the 6months. They could have sold them cheaper from day one and still made a great profit. Here's the inside fact on how much a pet shop pays for a dog from a PM.......only 35.00 to 50.oo. Dogs are like gold to a pet shop. Pure greed! Now you know why the PMs feel they have to breed so many dogs in order to make a profit. The so call designer dogs, when they were a rage were sold to most pet shops for 150- 200 and the pet shops sold some of them for 2000-3000. I know for a fact that the so called teacup chis and yorkies were sold here for over 3000.00 and the dam-- pet shop only paid 300.00 for them. This really gets my goat up! So when two of these pets shops couldn't sell their dogs and a year later went out of business I had a party for myself of sheer joy! pickiting was the way that Petland stopped buying dogs for a while and then when CA passed the bill, that really put an end to it. Oh I forgot, if you want to really get involved, you could also help with transporting. It's called legs, Most people only have to drive a dog from point A to Point B which is usually not more then 1 or 2hours of your time. Dogs have been driven from CA to NY this way, with everyone all along the way donating their time to meet the next driver. If it were not for all the great legs out their many dogs could not be saved, because then the rescues could not guarantee that they have a definite way of getting them into a foster/adopt home. So you see, their are a lot of ways to help, without it costing you money, just a little bit of your time can actually save a dogs life. Heres video on the subject http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1TFkreWV38&feature=related ♥ Peggy & The Girls ♥ -----Original Message----- From: Kavi <[email protected]> To: Chihuahuas <[email protected]> Sent: Fri, Oct 29, 2010 2:40 am Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] Puppy Mill Auction-Hundreds need our help ya know... the squeaky wheel gets the grease! The way to get the word out about PMs is protest on street corners with signs! People can protest also in front of or on the sidewalks of pet stores that sell puppies and kittens. (make sure they actually get PM animals). I do know of one pet store here in Nevada that sells puppies. It reminds me of the "PETLAND" that was in CA. I am not sure where there puppies come from, but I would guess PM's. Some of those "puppies" are NO LONGER puppies!! They have been there so long they are more than 6 months old and barely fit in the cage they keep them in. ya and on wire floors!! It makes me sick!! Last time I went there, they had a sweet sweet little chi puppy. I could have taken her home in a heart beat! but she was like $600! and it would be adding to the PM's profits. money money money!! I am glad it worked out for them. As far as the pet shops go, you are absolutely right! Right now it is a work in progress. In certain cities in CA they have banned pets shops from selling dogs and cats unless they can prove that they are from a shelter/ rescue. A couple of other states are trying to get the laws changed too. Here on the east coast, I know of six local pet shops who are not selling dogs anymore, but only because they were having a hard time selling them but because of all the good grief people gave them on not selling PM dogs. Hooray! So the word is spreading, we just have to keep at it. Their are ways that we can all help, without it costing us money. Be an advocate for the rescues. Every Time some one says how cute your dog is, tell them that their are more just like him up for adoption. Explain why they shouldn't buy from a pet shop. Start networking for the rescues through emails to groups and other rescues and a blog, you can't believe how may dogs are taken off of death row because of just one email that got out their. I can tell you from my own experience that the feeling is exhilarating! It's almost as if you took the dog your self, especially when you see those cute little faces, just begging to be loved. If you can foster a rescue that is even better, Most rescues pay for the dogs medical/flea meds etc needs while they are in your care. Some even supply the food. So if you have the time and can learn to give up that dog once you have found it a forever home then you have contributed to the never ending problem. Who knows while fostering you may just find another furmate for yourself. ♥ Peggy & The Girls ♥ -----Original Message----- From: Kavi <[email protected]> To: Chihuahuas <[email protected]> Sent: Fri, Oct 29, 2010 1:38 am Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] Puppy Mill Auction-Hundreds need our help ALL pet stores should be banned from selling dogs and cats!! I have seen so many shows on animal planet about these puppy mills and I could not even sleep after wards. The president of the SPCA is a wonderful man and often has people go undercover and buy many of these disposable dogs. They have never felt grass on their feet, or sitting on the couch with someone who loves them. Often they are in metal buildings with no heating or air, it is so awful. We need to not only stop this but we also need to inform the public regarding factory farming, which is just as cruel and mean. How could America allow this kind of savage treatment of any animal - well its all about profit. Look what they are doing to the beautiful wild Mustang horses in Nevada. The farmers want the land and the use helicopters to get them to run into pens and then they are locked up. They live in family pods but no one cares. I feel that us humans are the meanest and cruelest animal of all. I believe if more people were educated that they would stand up and do something. Do you know that if everyone just cut down the eating of red meat by 20% it would be the same as everyone driving a hybrid car because their gas pollutes our air. Well their are my 2 cents worth. This month alone their will be 6 PM (Puppy Mill) auctions. Their are two types of auctions, the regular type which goes on all the time is when a particular Mill will auction off part of its stock so it can replenish the mill with new young healtheir dogs. They auction off their worn out and sometimes very sick dogs, or puppies that they know will later on in life have problems from bad breeding (but they don't tell the auction that or the buyer) .The ultimate sad and sick part of this is that they sell them to other worse PMs for as little as $5.00. Some times if their is any stock left over at the end of the auction, they either shoot them or drown them or worse yet drop them off in the streets or woods or just leave them in their cages usually in an abandoned building to rot to death. This is the horror of what goes on in the PMs and the public has to be made aware of the whole story, not just part of it like the news and tv tells you. It is true that the laws have changed some what within the past couple of years and several of these PMs have been prosecuted for ending their auctions in this manner, but that only went as far as the ones that actually got caught. So far this month, 5 of these auctions have already taken place, several hundred dogs have been involved. Tomorrow is the biggest double auction that anyone has ever heard of. This is the second type of auction. It is called a Closing Auction, where they sell not only the dogs, but all the equipment and the buildings and sometimes even the property. Their are 804 dogs at this auction, 57 CHI's are included and possibly puppies. Since this is a Closing Auction, it doesn't mean that all the dogs are old and sick, in fact most of them are young. October's auctions totaled several thousand dogs. Their are more coming up in Nov too. So here's the thing, many rescues have been going to these auctions and bid on the dogs to prevent another PM breeder from buying them. Not only does this save that particular dog, but just think of all the puppies that we have prevented from being born into a hell hole. This double closing has almost every breed that you can think of listed to bid off. An auction is not for the faint hearted. It goes on for two days. The dogs are literally stuffed into small cages and not attended to for the two days. The cages are stacked from the floor to the ceiling, row after row. They are grabbed out and stuffed back in again and again, until the bidding is finished. Bare in mind that these poor souls have never been handled by humans or felt grass or cement on their paws or have a clue what a car is or anything other then seeing other dog cages and barking all their lives. They deserve so much better, and the rescues are trying so hard to make a difference. This is one way to stop PMs, plus advocating not to buy, and not to breed because for each dog that is bought, or for each dog that is bred, it gives all the PMs dogs, the rescued dogs and the shelter dogs once less chance of finding a forever home. Their are thousands and thousands of dogs just on Petfinders alone who need a home, why bring more into this world, and never knowing that maybe one day the puppies that you sold could wind up in a shelter or found by a PM and used as a breeder, or worse yet used as a bait dog? A lot of people don't realize that these PMs are unscrupulous. They can have a family member go to a shelter and adopt a dog and then use it for breeding, to them it is new stock to mix in. The shelters don't do a check on people who adopt and the PMs and backyard breeders know it. Things have been so bad for some of the shelters in different states that they weren't even charging a fee to people to adopt a dog. If the laws were mandatory that no dog can be released from a shelter unless it is spayed and up to date on shots, worming, etc, we wouldn't have as many problems. But the funds aren't their for the shelters to do that, so they do the best that they can. Their will be more and more of these Close Out Auctions in the months to come, because of the economy and all the advertising not to buy a dog from a pet shop. The pet shops can't sell their dogs, which means the PMs can't sell to the pet shops. So then what happens to all the dogs that exist in the PMs? Some one has to rescue them and the only way a PM will release a dog is through the almighty dollar, even if it is 5 or 10 dollars, they don't care. Thus the auctions. So I am including the link for the auction and another link of a huge rescue that will be their among a lot of other rescues that will be their. They are going to need every ones support, financially, fosters, adopters etc. If you are interested in helping out in any way, please call the rescues in your area and ask if they participated or where they could direct you to help out.
