My vet said it could be any number of neurological problems, but it would cost many hundreds of $$$ to put him through all the tests to find out. She's the brand new vet who was quite impressed with herself... If Cooper gets worse, I'll take him to another vet. In the meantime, we'll take it one day at a time. Carolyn

She said basically the same thing your vet said. If the seizures are only about once a month, lasts no longer than five minutes, then they are in the "normal" range. She didn't recommend he go on any medication unless his seizures start coming more frequently and in clusters. Based on what the others have said on this forum, chis can have a very long comfortable life even with seizures. I'm more comfortable now, but it still scares me when my little guy has to go through that. I've tried holding him during a seizure, but it's not possible because he involuntarily jerks around too much. I put him (or leave him) in his crate and just talk to him until it's over. Afterward all he wants to do is sleep. I hope this helps ease your mind a little. One of mine, almost two years old, has been having them. The first two were really mild and a few weeks apart. Last Saturday night she had two more, one right after the other and they were worse than the first two, but still really mild and they didn't last very long . The first time she had one, we rushed her off to the emergency vet and they did blood work and nothing else. This time we didn't take her to the emergency vet because we knew they wouldn't do anything for her. My husband called our vet this morning and she said that even though the seizures are now more severe (Lori is now flopping around), because the duration is so short, they are still considered mild. Because the medication (Phenobarbital twice a day) is hard on dogs, she suggests that for the time being we just keep an eye on her. If they continue to become more frequent or severe, we should bring her in. They will then do another blood work-up and put her on the medication. I guess what my question is..if any of you have experienced this with your Chihuahua, how did you handle it? I am afraid to leave her alone for any length of time. I make sure she is with me wherever I am in the house, and now I don't want to have to leave her alone if I have to leave the house for any length of time for fear of her having a not so mild one and hurting herself.
