Hi Nancy I am no expert on this subject of Patellar luxation. I did a google on it and read as much as possible then come to my own thoughts on it. My opinion is, if you have not tried some of these other natural ways, then you might want to try it for some months. Nothing helps overnight. This condition will only get worse over time, no matter what. Even joint supplements will not help as far as a cure. This is the knee cap slipping out of place. To help to keep it from getting worse sooner, I would try not to allow your dog to jump up and down off anything! not even the couch. Ricky just comes and jumps up on the couch before I can get him. My couch is not that high. He can not jump up on my bed as its too high. I carry him up and down the stairs for going outside. I walk him several times a day, as I live in a condo with only a small patio. I try to keep him walking at a slower pace than he wants to go. He has always chewed on his back knee area... getting mad and growling the whole time. I use to think he was just bored, but now I wonder if his knee is hurting at that time. I would like to get or make Ricky back leg warmers!! If anyone knows how to make these or other ideas for this let me know. I thought about nylons / stockings, but cant find them small enough.
Ricky would be at grade 1 right now. just where he is starting to lift his right back leg a little while we are walking. not all the time. WEIGHT is a big big factor for this condition as the more weight on the knees the more it will hurt & cause slipping. Ricky is a thin dog, but healthy. Just the way he is. I read that a raw diet is best for this, but I do not know that for a fact. Wellness puts out a canned dog food called Wellness Core. Its as close to raw as you can get without doing it yourself. its grain free also. I will have to read up on grains and joints. I did read someplace that these dogs should not have grains. I do feed him Wellness core. If you decide to do surgery, you might want to consult a few specialist for this first. Who has the best track record on recovery / outcome. A specialist should know the most I would think. Just do your homework before surgery. If its not done right, then there can be problems down the road. do alot of research / call around / read / on this before deciding surgery. Well I did a lot of research and the results and recovery are awful. Are you going to have surgery? If not please share with me what you know about the natural way. Abbey has no pain and can run faster than a greyhound. So I do not want her to go under and take any risks when she has no pain and no disabilities. I would appreciate and info you can share with me. Thanks Nancy Let's pray that 2011 will be peaceful for all the world! Ricky seems to be hoping a bit when we are out for a walk. Only on the right back leg. He does not limp, and does it after he has peed with that leg up & sometimes while walking now. I just read to give Glucosemine suppliments, feed raw or grain free food, walk on an incline to help strengthen the muscles around the knee, ect. He does not cry or show that he is in any pain. I want to do this a natural way. I have been feeding wellness Core & wellness ninety-five to him. Only the wellness core is grain free and as close to raw as you can get without me doing it. Does anyone have an opinion? thanks shanna & ricky Christening, Communion, Formal Wear For Girls and Boys ages Newborn & up Click here to enter my ebay store! http://stores.ebay.com/Kavis-Christening-n-Communion-Store
