The main thing is that she probably doesn’t know what is going on…and until she
finds out it is a fun thing to do, then she will enjoy it more. I always put a
blanket in the bottom of Dolly & Desi’s booster seat and add a few toys or a
really big chew bone. Since Dolly & Desi learned to coexist in the booster
seat, they usually just sit up looking around outside and then they bark at all
the cars next to us when we are stopped at a light. I did socialize both of
mine from the time that I got them, and so they do go places that are fun as
well as to the vet – which they also think is fun! I have had to stop taking
them to Petco and PetSmart because Desi wants to yap all through the store
letting all the other dogs know that he is there – the little prince of comedy!
But I have seen that they really don’t care if it is just a drive to the drive
through boxes at the post office, or actually going someplace to get out of the
car. It could just be the movement that also makes babies want to fall asleep
on a drive. Whatever it is, I am glad that they like being in the car. I am
not sure just how far I would take them, and the most that they have gone in
the booster seat might be 40 miles to a pet fair at the south end of the
valley. The longer we are moving the better they are…and they know if I stop.
Sometimes I actually have to carry them in the house because they are so sound
asleep on the way home. Just like little human babies!

I take her to work and she's not happy about being 'locked' up while I'm
working. It's only a couple of hours (if she were home she would be crated as
well). I'll have to be sure to take her fun places too or she'll associate the
car with work. I'm trying to socialize her with people - so taking her to my
part time job seems sensible (it's only 2 nights a week & every other Sat). It
worked wonders for my Liza-but she didn't mind being crated. On Saturday Char
gets to hang with me in pharmacy for 1/2 a day.

Dolly pretty much was in the booster seat from the time that she was 9 or 10
weeks old. Desi took his first ride at 8 weeks on the way home from the
breeder – he had never been outside before that day, and he did vomit on the
way home…after that he has been good. I think that it is important that
Charlotte can see out of the window…otherwise she may not understand the fun
that going on a car ride can be. Sometimes I just put Dolly & Desi in the
booster seat and ride to the other end of the community to drop something
off…they don’t care. We get home and they are happy and go running into the
house like they just had the biggest adventure of their life.

Hi Chi lovers....Charlotte tried out her new car seat yesterday (the TagALong
that some of you recommended). It's a short ride to my vet's office (my part
time job) - so it wasn't much of a 'ride' but she got a little antsy ...so I
gave her a bully stick that I give my other dogs when they ride (Liza Jane is a
good rider - Timmy is a hysterical pup in the car - so the bully stick calms
him a teensy bit to get us to the groomer without having a stroke).

I had no trouble with Liza as a baby- she was agreeable with the ride pretty
much right away - but Charlotte seems to get fussy. Is it just continuous car
trips that will make her relax? The bully stick kept her busy for the most
part ...

She is almost 11 weeks old-had another set of vaccinations last night - and a
whopping 2.4 pounds (hoping she stays small - dad was 5 pounds - but mom was a
leggier chi weighing in at about 12 pounds).

P.S. HOW DID I LIVE THIS LONG WITHOUT A CHIHUAHUA?
