We have a 14 year old Chi Mix that is not a rescue. We were able to see how she was treated from birth and she has never been abused in any way but she is the most insecure dog I have ever owned. If we are traveling - she refuses to eat or drink out of a travel bowl. Introducing anything new to her sends her into a panic. We have never been able to trim her nails as she cries and moans the whole time but she is good for the vet doing the trim. Also she does rituals with her food - takes it to another area (dry food) and walks around it several times before eating. She also barks at her water bowl 3 times before she will drink. I think sometimes it may just be in their genes to be insecure. We long ago just declared her neurotic and love her anyway.
