I had thought of that. I believe that to do the test that he couldn't be around any other dogs for a certain period of time. I cannot separate him from Dolly. There are many different places and ways that the DNA is tested. I do not believe that my vet normally does that, I had asked once and they said they prefer not to do it because it comes back with a lot of information that could not be - such as a dog being part Chihuahua and part Great Dane..not the exact breeds, but I can't remember what they were.
The only reason that I would really want to do a test is to make sure that whatever diseases or conditions another breed would have that I would have to know about and watch out for. My vet sees my dogs so often and he does check out everything whenever I take them for a shot - $10 includes the vaccine and him to check their mouths, teeth, bodies for lumps, fat, etc. So for most things that could happen, first I would most likely have Desi in there much faster than some other owners would (this group excluded) and the vet says he just sees Chihuahua with Desi and that could be because he has more training where he actually can tell certain traits that are present for other breeds. He wanted to be a vet from the time that he was seven, and grew up in the Bahamas. He could have seen a lot of Chihuahuas in the Bahamas that were more like Desi, and also he probably read all the books about animals if he always wanted to be a vet. Now that Desi has lost the fat in his face (actually the last place to lose it) he does look more like a Chihuahua than he ever did before. I guess the only thing that is really different is how big his skull is, and the way that his head normally tilts down when most Chihuahuas the faces look straight ahead. He has the wider legs like the apple type, and he has the longer thinner back legs like the deer type (and Dolly's). I know she is part applehead and part deer type. But having Desi, Dolly's head is not rounded, and I think that her nose is a bit longer than the apple type and it is shorter than Desi's. She has the slight body and her eyes are not a bit bulgy like the applehead. I wish I could remember what the apple head part of her is, because I don't really see it when I am thinking right now. Unless it was that her nose is shorter than a deer type??? I just think of her as a very sweet little Chihuahua, and that same with Desi. Chihuahuas have been bred and cross bred between types and after several generations I guess all kinds of differences can come out in the pups. If it came to a point where a DNA test would be necessary to treat him for something, then I could get him one. He is neutered so I am not going to breed him. And if something were wrong, the vet would know how to treat it, unless there were very similar problems and they were to be treated differently for one breed than another. They are now suppose to be 92% plosive, as compared to when they first came out and didn't have all the breeds accounted for. They claim it is just the rare breeds that are still missing from there DNA banks, as not enough samples have been stored to confirm the testing for those breeds. Since all the popular small breeds are accounted for, I would think that you would have good results. -------Original Message------- From: Joan Croft <mailto:[email protected]> Date: 1/20/2012 5:01:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [Chihuahuas] Found Dog And I just want to add that there have been more days than not, that I thought that Desi was a mix despite the breeder telling me he was purebred. I have asked my vet numerous times and he says he just sees all Chihuahua. Maybe what he has is something that comes from many generations ago. He looks a lot like my Desi Lou - as far as his features.the longer nose, and Desi does put his ears back like that when he is very happy. The other interesting thing (to me) is that he doesn't hold his head out straight, but more of a downward postion. I sure hope that you can find his home. These little guys can run and then you have to figure where you found him he could have come from a large radius around that . It is really hard to make this comment, but I hope that his owners will see your ads and get him back. However, if you don't put collar with tags on your dog, then maybe you shouldn't even have one. I don't know about where you are (If I remember correctly you live in Highland?) but I know that one time I asked my vet about the microchip. I guess I hadn't thought about it before, but the tech brought Dolly back to me and asked me if I knew where her microchip was inserted. I didn't know because that was inserted before I ever had her. So, I asked the vet if they scan the dogs when they come in as a new patient.he said 'NO'; they cannot scan / or they choose not to, unless the person bringing them in asks for them to do it. I know that if the dog you just found had a microchip, it should still have a collar and maybe the tag from the microchip with the number to call. But, I shudder to think that if, for instance, the exterminator came and did not close the gate all the way, and one of mine got out and started running. Someone could find them on the next street and keep them. They could go to my vet - and they would pretty much know that they are Dolly & Desi.Desi is so gaga over the vet that he is unmistakable, and one of the ladies at the vet said that there are a lot of Chihuahuas that they see, but Dolly has just a totally different look than any of the others.I hope that is a good thing. But if someone found them and took them to another vet in the area to get medical care and keep them, then the vet doesn't scan them because they haven't been asked to do that. We get our dogs microchipped so that if they get out that they can be returned.but without the vets scanning new dogs, I don't really know how effective that it for people that have no intention of finding the rightful owners.
