Yes that would be extremely difficult..letting them go.  Like the people who
take in guide dog puppies..raise them..then give them back..Ouch!! that would
kill me..

My only problem is I had a hard time allowing them out of my foster care once
they were well enough; hence the reason my house is always so full.  But I've
slowed down now - not taking in as many-concentrating on what I have currently,
thankfully everyone is as healthy as they're going to get.   I'll take a
critical medical case or an injured rabbit/guinea pig/bird...But I continue to
tell myself it is not staying - a good home will be found...so far - I'm 2 for
2 in 6 months...

Funny..different people have the strengths for different challenges.  Animals
are my weak spot..It would cause me too much pain to be surrounded by abused
and broken little animal souls.  Maybe because for me I can reach children and
parents by words and communication and you just never know what animals have
truly experienced and what they are thinking and feeling.

Pam - that is so wonderful - Bless you for giving these children your care...(I
did baby holding way back in the day at a local hospital) - crack babies,
preemies etc. for babies that either had not parents or parents that could not
be with the baby as much as they needed to be..It was just volunteer - I
enjoyed it at first - but wow - the emotional part of it was utterly exhausting
- It takes a really special person to do what you do (or did) - I ended up not
being able to handle seeing these babies so sick and being so helpless ...I
seemed to do much better helping animals....

Hmmm..u been peeking in my mind?? I worked with children that were emotionally
and mentally challenged such as fetal alcohol and crack babies..helping parents
cope

with life's journey with these little ones.  Sometimes rewarding, sometimes
just plain heartbreaking.  You learn to be calm and disciplined and
structured..as giving into the sympathy and the emotions of the cases can be
worst case scenario for both the children and the parents. But sometimes life
can be just darn cruel.

Pam - again correct - rescues with bad beginnings definitely need different
types of handling - and disciplining.
(Pam -are you a teacher - you have an air about you that you are a wonderful
teacher - an advisor or mentor)?
I have done rescue for so many years - I do understand that certain abused
animals need different care and discipline.  Example...I climbed a fence and
took a rabbit from a frozen cage one winter  - the neighbors said it was a baby
a year before I rescued her - A baby when they tossed her outside in the
cage!!! - nails growing into her pads  - never had human contact - food thrown
into her cage- vicious little thing...it took me 3 months for her to trust me
enough to reach into her pen to change her water bowl without having to wear
a glove (none of my bunnies live in cages, they live in exercise pens)...6
months to take food from my hand. She is 5 years old now-runs to greet me -
takes treats and food from me like a baby takes candy - her name is Tabitha
Grace - living in my house - on a lovely blue flowered carpet - fully
littertrained - running with the cats-gentle with them - allows me to pick her
up (altho she doesn't like it), I cut
her nails without any fuss...But she knows that I'm the boss and that's
that. I never did anything but take the time she needed but disciplined her at
the same time...I tapped her tail when she would pee on the floor in order to
teach her to be littertrained - she's now a perfectly trained bunny that can
run anywhere in the house - but runs back to her box to potty...
It's up to the owner to understand the individual animal - it's instincts and
behaviors - and do what is best for that  animal's situation and allow that
animal to learn - not all animals learn by the same methods - especially
rescues.

Judy, I understand where you are coming from since you rescue and see the
effects of abused dogs.  But this dog has not been abused.  I think you are
overreacting because of your personal journey with these dogs.  My dogs and
many others are totally secure, trusting, safe and loved.  They are not damaged
and broken.  I can tap my dogs on the snout or wrap my hand around their muzzle
to show my displeasure or use the Mom voice or roll them over to show Alpha.
That is being Alpha and demanding respect.  They are better and more trusting
dogs for it. I understand you may have to treat abused animals differently, but
we are not speaking of an abused dog here.  All dogs are not the same and can
not be treated the same.

Pam,  Understanding the dog is very important.  A flick on the nose can be a
very severe and painful thing for a small dog.  How about somebody slapping
your face which would be the same if size is compared.  Hitting in any form
should be a last resort.

I think the people on this list are right and totally correct.

I dont think she is over-reacting..I think the group is frankly.  She comes to
us with a question about aggressive behavior and how to deal with it, and she
gets jumped all over.  A flick on the nose is not physical abuse for crying out
loud.  She is exactly right..this is the time to deal with these type of
behaviors, when the puppy is young.  This is exactly how little dogs become
little tyrants because they don't have strong Alpha pack leaders and
rules..just like children.

Just because she doesnt like people in her face does not mean that she needs to
be disciplined. Dogs have an instinct as to what people they can trust. Also,
has anyone taken the time with her to socialize her ~ gently and over a period
of time, NOT JUST A SNAP ON THE NOSE?????? It sounds like you are being way too
impatiant with her as well as expecting too much too soon. Dogs are like kids,
each personality is different. Maybe she just needs a little extra loving and
gentle care.
I will take her off your hands if you like. I hate to see you both so upset.
Sincerely, Diana

Yeah, I think you are over reacting. Itsy will do this because she does not
like being startled or bothered when she is sleeping. I always make it a
point to say her name name and here girl, come on girl time to go out. She
is fine then. Don't get your feelings hurt, it is not personal, it is a
reaction.

I guess my point is that not all things fit all dogs. Sounds to me like she
just does not want to be bothered while she is resting. Not all dogs will
always be alike.

Ask yourself how she is otherwise? Is this the only time she does that?

Hi Everyone,
I'm noticing some behavior in Charlotte (3 mos chi), that I have never
experienced and do not like. My other 2 dogs are sweet, well behaved,
loving, even tempered loves. I've worked with them & they are such wonderful
dogs-well trained & very respectable. (altho they've trained me well too)
LOL
I've noticed when I lean over to kiss Charlotte when she's sleeping she
snaps @ my face. The first time she did this I was shocked! Did it again and
couldn't believe it-my feelings were hurt. Then I went to move her & she
growled. I gave her a 'no' command each time but she doesn't even react to
the command. I tapped her nose once & said 'no', but she just curled up &
when back to sleep. I will not accept this behavior so I make a point of
'bothering' her sometimes when she's sleeping so we can work on this.
Anybody have any other ideas?
Lynda
