My heart is breaking for you. I've been through this several times, with dogs and cats. There are many kind vets who will give you a quiet place in their office to say goodbye, administer a sleepy medicine to Joe so he'll drift off gentley and not feel the needle. You might even find a vet who would come to your home. They also give you some options, like cremation and getting the ashes back (that's what I always do) or .... well I'm not sure what the other options are.
I'm so so sorry you are going through this. We all have, and will. It's horrible. Someone needs to breed the LONG-LIVED dog! Forget tails and fur and snouts and ears, someone give 'em long life!
