Try a Natural dog food, one were the first two ingredients are chicken. If the Purina has the first couple of ingredients as corn or rice he is probably having a hard time digesting it and that would make him lethargic and constipate him. When you switch a dogs diet it has to be gradual usually for the first couple of days it should be mixed with 1/4 of the new food to 3/4 of the old food and gradually increase the new food every couple of days There are so many good foods out there. Read the ingredients and the protein and fat level. Some chi's do well on a 1/2 cup of dry food split into two feedings per day. Others may need less or maybe a little more. It all depends on the dogs weight and metabolism.
You can go onto Petco and Petsmart sites and they list the most common Natural dog foods and you will be able to see the ingredients, and then from there you can visit the manufactures site for even more info on there products. You can also buy plain pumpkin in the can and feed him a half a teaspoonful, twice for two days, and then once on the third day. That will regulate him. Pumpkin is good to balance and regulate a dog whether it has diarrhea or is constipated, it works both ways. If he still has the problem on the fourth day, and isn't going to the bathroom and seems to be getting worse even on the second day, then a Vet visit may be needed to make sure he didn't eat something else that is blocking him. Some times their anal gland needs to be emptied too, which the vet can do. -------Original Message------- From: aaron.bach88 Date: 2/3/2012 4:46:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Chihuahuas] What to feed my little guy? Hello all, I am a first time poster and have to say some of the items on here are quite useful. Now however I need to reach out for some feedback and help. My little man. He is a 9 year old short hair apple head. I found him in a shelter about a year ago and he has thoroughly bonded with me (which makes my wife jealous once in a while!) but in any case, here is the issue. Initially when I got him he was a healthy 8lbs and very lively. At the shelter he was in, they had him on Purina One Toy Breed which is what I fed him in the beginning. However, he lost a lot of weight very quickly even eating 2 cups a day of the toy breed. So I switched him to small dog at the recommendation of the folks at the shelter he came from. I now feed him Purina One Small dog. The new problem, he has become somewhat lethargic, he has problems keeping food down, and he has some trouble going to the bathroom that he has never had before. What should I be feeding him? What works for some of you, and have any of you seen this in your little ones?
