Some dogs that are in cages and crates feel threatened when some one or
something tries to go into there crate, because the dog knows that once
inside, they feel cornered and can't defend themselves. I would bring the
crate inside and leave the door opened so he can come and go as he pleases
for a couple of days, and not bother him once he is inside it. If you need
to have him come out, then call him out first and reward with a treat, do
not pull him out. When you see him go into the crate on his own, then have
your hubby reward him with a treat by throwing it inside from the entrance.
A crate represents a den to a dog, and one should never pull a dog, out of
it, or force a dog into it, no matter where the crate is. You should always
open the crate door and say 'come' and 'good boy' when you want him to come
out, even when the crate is in the car. When you want him to go inside it,
use a command word like 'crate' then good boy and throw a treat inside, once
he is in on his own, then close the door.

Since he doesn't show this behavior with you, then I would have your husband
and others do the training inside the home first and then practice when the
crate is in the car.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Crate Agression

Hello,
I am asking for advice about a problem we are having with Scout, our 4 year
old Chi. He sleeps and rides in the car in a crate. When we go to get in the
car he happily jumps in the car and goes right into his crate. I am able to
close the door without any reaction from him. If anyone else gets near him
when he is in his crate he acts like he is going to nip them. He does not do
that to me. My husband went to put him in his crate in the car and he balked
at the door and did not want to go in, My husband pushed(gently) him into
the crate and Scout nipped at him. If anyone would stick a finger into his
crate he would probably nip. Other than that he is an angel! Should I have
other people give him treats in the crate? What else would help?
Thanks,
Sue
