The canine carryouts are not rawhide they are made to taste like bacon or something. I can break each one into about twenty small pieces. When Mandy was here, I was filling the water bowls more, and I thought that she was perhaps drinking more. Now that she has gone home, I find that the days when I give them the small Canine Carryout treats they not only drink a lot of water, but I was just watching Dolly and she was drinking straight for maybe 30 seconds. That is just not like her. I see Desi drinking a lot more too.
I am going to just throw those treats out and stay with the safe ones Charlee Bear Turkey liver and cranberry is their favorite. Old Mother Hubbard Just Veggin treats for Dolly when she finishes a bowl of her food; and some others that have been tried and loved. They dont get many treats, and so usually two or three kinds is more than enough. Other people buy them treats and they dont seem to understand (even though they may have dogs too) that most of these are really not the best for them. I used to give Dolly some Jerkey-type treat that had the glucosamine in it after her knee surgery, but havent given them to her in a very long time. They are pretty expensive compared to the other treats that also have the glucosamine in them. I say to just stay safe with the few treats that I have researched and that they love. Some of these treats are really from the rawhide of the animal. They are treated with arsenic to kill any bacteria and bleach. The FDA allows a certain amount of both of those to kill any harmful bacteria. It is not salt. When I see mine drinking excessive water I add the treat name to a sheet of paper that I have have hung on my cabinet door, so I remember never to buy them again and I throw out whatever I have left in the bag. The dog food companies are not required by law to list bleach and arsenic as an ingredient. Years ago when it became known to the public, some dog companies listed on there pkg that they did not treat their product with bleach or arsenic, but the kicker is at the food plant where they get the bones and rawhides they do treat them with those products. It works just like some companies are saying made in America, when in fact the original product or some ingredients come from some where else. -------Original Message------- From: Joan Croft <mailto:[email protected]> Date: 3/14/2012 1:49:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [Chihuahuas] Re: Dogs Fall Ill As Owners, Vets and Lawmakers Blame Treats from China I think that there is probably way too much salty stuff in the jerkey that unless the dog drinks humungous amounts of water, is doing damage to the kidneys. The kidney cannot flush out what is passing through. I dont give Dolly & Desi jerkey treats. However, I have some little packets of Canine Carry Outs. Each small piece, I was breaking in half and before I would go out, they would each get a half of it (perhaps ½ inch each) broke into tinier pieces. I have noticed that when I give them that little amount that they each drink about four times their normal amount of water. That tells me that something is definitely wrong with those treats. They have a very strong aroma, and they only drink that much water if they have had that little bit of that treat. The Canine CarryOuts are made in the US but I think that some of these companies are not researching what some of the ingredients or additives do to a dog. It is soooo sad! I think they need to come up with better and faster new types of testing, because if it ever happened to humans we would be in the same boat. Maybe they also need to hire better scientist, seems like the staff they have now has no clue as to what they are doing. Fact is dogs are dying and they have enough evidence from consumers and Vets that it is the jerky sticks, and that should be enough to get them off the shelves, while they are trying to figure out what is in them. I am glad to see that this time it made the front page of msnbc. -------Original Message------- From: uncasheville_mom <mailto:[email protected]> Date: 3/13/2012 9:58:06 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Chihuahuas] Re: Dogs Fall Ill As Owners, Vets and Lawmakers Blame Treats from China When I took Scooter to the vet in December the dog treat warning was posted on the bulletin board & my vet said that pets were dying from chicken jerky. I'm so glad I got the warning because I keep seeing chicken jerky treats in stores all over town. I'm ticked off that the FDA & vets can't prove conclusively that the chicken jerky is the cause of illness in our beloved pets. If it was a human getting sick, the FDA might step in??
