I was able to partially solve this problem with my two boys.  They seem to
need something (a rock or a piece of wood ) to aim at.  I placed a rock
about 10 or 12 inches tall in the center of the wee wee pad.  So far they
have done much better because they get close enough to hit it and so they
don't miss the pad as often.  Not perfect but much better.  Oh and I
switched to the extra large pads.
