Dolly & Desi got an extreme corn sentivity from the Royal Canin Chihuahua food. I didn't correlate it at first, but between the two of them they were drinking about a gallon of water every 6 days. I did tell my vet - but didn't have the exact amount so I just said they have excessive thirst. Then the eyes were watering. At first I thought that Dolly's were due to that bad infection she had at the beginning of the year. Then Desi's eyes were running down his face too...not allergic thick discharge or even the gooky stuff that forms around the eye. I emailed Royal Canin and asked them if they changed anything when the bag went from 10 lbs to 15 lbs. The gal wrote back and said that there wasn't anything in the new formula that wuold cause excessive thirst and to give them a few weeks to a month after starting the new food. I went back and read my message to them and it said that I had two Chihuahuas who have been eating the Royal Canin Chihuahua for over 3 years now. I wrote back asking 'what new formula?' She wrote back that they added two forms of corn and some other ingredients and removed a couple of ingredients. Saturday Mr Desi Lou was vomiting in the kitchen and all over me. I think that he ate too much of the compressed rawhide gingerbread man. As I was sitting there holding him, I got up and got one of the old RC Chihuahua bags and then dragged the big bag over and was comparing...they put Corn as the first and fourth ingredient and removed some meat sources. I did call my vet and he told me to put them back on what they were eating before and I had to explain that they just replaced the old formula with this one and there was no longer any of the original formula. He said I should get them something else because a gallon of water in less than a week is a bit more than excessive thirst. Because Desi was vomiting on Saturday, I put him on the Science Diet ID food that I still have (he will eat ANYTHING.) Last night I came home after some errands and my new habit of rubbing my finger down their faces to get the water off of them brought me a surprise...Desi's eyes were not watering...Dolly's were. The only difference was that Desi hadn't eaten the RC since Saturday morning. I went to PetSmart and spent so much time trying to decide. I came home with a small bag of Nutro Toy Breed food and a small bag of Bil Jac (which uses 5 lbs of chicken to make the one 6lb bag.) I opened the Nutro and put 3/4 of RC Chihuahua and 1/4 of the Nutro. I put it in Dolly's bowl and I was sitting about 10 feet away. Her head never came out of that bowl. The toy breed kibble is very tiny almost like little pellets, so I can't use that for Desi because it would be way too easy to get the food out of his treat toys very quickly. Half of my problem solved for now because Dolly is my picky eater. I looked at the bag of Bil Jac and it doesn't have calorie info, and Desi I would like to have food with lower calories so he can eat a little more. I emailed and am waiting for a reply. Today, I went to a bigger PetSmart and brought home a small bag of Eukanuba Chihuahua and a small bag of Natures Recipe Toy Breed Chicken, Barley & Rice recipe. Neither of these have calories on the bag, so I will have to inquire to the company. The clerk at PetSmart today told me that the Bil Jac are little sticks and therefore may not be the best for Desi's treat toys...and very little sticks at that. Teh sticks were on the picture for all of the other varieties, but not picture on the bag that I pictured, so I will check that out on the internet also. It is so difficult to make a change - especially when you have used the same food for three years and it is keeping them very healthy (Dolly's allergies just cannot be helped...she had them when I got her a 8 weeks). I now fed Dolly with the Nutro Toy breed twice and she has finished what is in her bowl. I need to keep her food simple, but tasty because I really don't want her colitis to return. Desi is still on the ID and as soon as I find out which of these other three would be best for him, I will try them out on him. I just don't want to be running to PetSmart everyday to find another food that may work for the ones that don't. His only problem is his food addiction, so the food has to be at least as big as the Royal Canin...the Eukanuba Chihuahua has a picture that says actual size...and I think it may be a little bigger thant he RC Chihuahua.
Well...I know how difficult this is for you, Peggy. I guess we each have one that is happy, but another that we have to find something new. If I get Desi on something that he likes and is not making him fat or having other reactions, I have no problem feeding each of them a different food. I thought Dolly would be the hardest to find something, but with Desi it is a 'size' thing because he CANNOT eat from a bowl...he inhales it. I will let you all know what I find out about the other three foods, but for now the Ultra Toy Breed Adult is doing well for Dolly.
