For dehydration you will need Pedialyte. You can buy it in a box that has individual powered packs. Give that several times a day. If you don't think that a she is getting enough fluids, you can put it into a syringe (you can get one from the vet when you are there, just in case) and squirt it in from the side of her mouth. Most dogs like it. You can also wet her dry kibble and let it sit for a few minutes until it is soaked.
NutraCal: just let her lick it from the tube as you squirt it out, or put some on your finger. Most dogs like this too. Give it to her a several times per day. A lot of females gain weight after spaying, you many want to find a good kibble that has a lower protein and lower fat, that should help to reduce her weight after a several weeks. Also for an over weight dog it is best not to free feed, but feed her twice a day. Maybe you are giving her too much? Most chis only eat 1/2 a cup of kibble per day, split into two feedings. Gigi was a perfect 6 lbs before her spay and gained an extra pound within a couple of months, then I changed her food a couple of times and finally found one that she is doing well on. She has lost 1/2 lb and I don't think she will loose anymore. She gets 1/3 cup split into two feedings per day, and has been maintaining her weight. She only gets a small milkbone biscuit, which is non fattening and I break that in half, twice a day. She doesn't get any other type of treats. She is on a strict diet mainly because she has a liver issue. Sometimes I will give her a little piece of cheese or a little bit of egg. Other treats that are good are small pieces of carrots and broccoli. Giving Liza small pieces of boiled chicken, and no skin is okay. Chicken isn t that fattening, but it is a high protein. -------Original Message------- From: margie_frbs Date: 6/25/2012 11:16:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Chihuahuas] Re: Liza not feeling well... Thank you. I will give her the pumpkin and pick up Nutra Cal. How much do you give? Liza has normal stools and goes her usual 2 times a day and peeing fine. I had been feeding her a few table scraps but that is going to stop. I ve been doing that for awhile without problems but will just use a tiny bit of chicken. She is 2 lbs overweight so easy to put weight on this little girl. I will report on the finds from the vet. Hopefully I can get in tomorrow. Liza finally ate her dinner at 9:00 pm but something is still off. I imagine the Nutra Cal would help with dehydration but I would not let her go like this long anyway. Thanks for your help. So glad I checked in. Love the photos and information here.
