Unless the licking is a long standing behaviorial problem..such as
compulsive..the behavior is usually attributed to nausea.  She could have
injested something that upset her stomach..could be a change of diet..or table
scraps..or treats.  I would restrict her to her normal food, and feed sparingly
for 24 hours.  It will not hurt to even take her off food and just have her
drink water for 24 hours to let her tummy settle.  Also an over the counter
stomacg med based on her weight might not hurt

Hi Debbie,

Sorry to hear of your loss of Mickey....they sure can put a whole in our heart
when they leave, so I can understand your pain.

I had a male maltese that did that a couple of times through his years, and
usually he would throw up. I just let him do his thing and all was well,
BUT, I can not say if that is the same reason why your dog is doing that. If
she continues it, or really sounds like she is choking, then it could also be
that she may have something stuck in her throat, which would require a Vet, and
I wouldn't wait if that's the case. Sorry it is difficult for you to get
around, maybe you could try calling a cab to the vet, before it gets to late in
the evening? Have you also tried to look up if any Vets in your area would do a
house call?  I know that could be expensive, and maybe just as much as a taxi?

Let us know what happens.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Sick Chi Maybe?

Hi Everyone, has been sometime since I last posted and have been in grievance
since I lost my oldest Chi to diabetes on April 15th at 11:50 pm, he would have
been 13 years old on May 24. Although people have told me I should remember he
is not suffering and going through the daily shot routine I found myself
feeling that I could have done more 8-( He struggled with diabetes for many
years even with the prescription dog food from this vet it just seemed that
weekend he was ready to give up. I sure do miss him especially when it came to
his routine of feeding and giving his shots and looking over at places he used
to lay and he would not be there.
I have 2 1/2 Chi's now that I love also and they need me to, so I have to carry
on with them but I will never forget my Mickey we had him since he was 8 weeks
old and so tiny. The reason I say 2 1/2 is that I have 2 (brother and sister)
that are 3 years old and we rescued a 1/2 Chi 1/2 Jack Russel that was 2 years
when we got her and she is going on 5 years now.
I'm sorry, I got into talking about my big boy passing and really was wanting
some advice on what is happening to my baby girl Chi tonight.
She was lying on the couch with me and she started licking my legs profusely
and then she got out from under the sheet that was over us and she was
continuously swallowing non stop, then she got down she is now licking
everything the carpet the kitchen floor, boxes, table legs. I had heard that
sometimes when dogs get sick they eat on grass in order to throw up what is
bothering their stomach. So, I went out and got various grasses (no danger of
anything on it because we do not use pestasides in our yard, and I run them
through water to wash off any dust that might be on them) she ate them like she
was starved to death I have never seen her eat that fast. The other 2 dogs
smelled of them but just walked away. I have not given her any more even though
she seemed to love it because I do not want to overdo things with her. After
she ate them she just continued to go back to licking everything. I was just
wondering if anyone in the group have ever seen a Chi
 do this.
I have no way to get her to our vet or the ER my vision is not good and I have
no car have not driven in about 3 years. I do not live in a big city with pay
rides and have no family or friends here yet, so I really hope someone can get
back to me about her, I'm getting really afraid that something is very wrong!
She is now coughing and still licking. Should I crate her to keep her from
licking the floors and everything? That in itself worries me she will get hair
off the floor.
Thanks To Anyone who can help me understand what is going on with her.
Debbie From Tennessee
