Actually it is much better to get as much done as you can while they are under anesthesia. The older the dog, the more risky the anesthesia is, especially on the tiny breeds. My Gigi is from a BYB too, and she was about 5-6yrs old at the time. I wanted both the spay and the teeth done at the same time, because I was a nervous wreck about putting her under and didn't want to take the chance 2x, which my vet had already decided that was the way to go. Today, it is a common practice to do it that way, and safer for them. I am only sorry that I didn't think of getting those front dew claws off too. They are a real pain and grow into a curl within 2 weeks, where as her other nails are very tiny and only need to be done every 6 weeks or so.
You wouldn't believe how much better she felt, after she had those rotten teeth out. She acted like night and day, and made it quite clear how much they were really hurting her. My only advice for after surgery is to get the inflatable collar instead of that horrible big plastic collar. Gigi didn't mind it at all and didn't bump into things and could eat and drink very easily. It acted more like a soft pillow for her, and she could not get at her tummy either. They sell the chi size at Petco. I also cut out a hole in a couple of oneses for her tail and kept that on her to keep her tummy clean I bought the newborn size at a dollar store and she liked them. Plus I gave her Nutra-Cal for a couple of days, to make sure her sugar didn't drop, which chis are prone to. BTW, a senior blood profile is a must before she goes under, cause the test will show if her main organs can handle the anesthesia. Ask for a senior blood test, not the standard blood test, it is a lot more in depth test and reveals a lot more about her basic health. Why did her previous owner want to put her down? She is so lucky that you took her. Can we see a pic of her? Prayers being said for a quick recovery and please keep us posted. -------Original Message------- From: Kitty LeMarr Date: 8/22/2012 10:02:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Chihuahuas] Question regarding Dental and Spay Sweetie needs a dental and to be spay. My vet wants to do blood work which I want also, but he wants both done while she is under anesthetic. Am I being to protective of my little girl? She is 9 yo. and has had pups in her other life. I adopted her last week from the shelter. Her previous owner want her PTS. I don't want both done at the same time.
