Yikes! I was looking at the videos for some areas, and it is just like Katrina.....those poor people lost their homes for the second time! Is your able to still stay in his home, or is it flooded? Hope they will be okay. They aren't going to have power in some areas for quite a while yet. The horrible aftermath of cleaning up worrying about mold and everything else that goes with it.
My sisters semi-basement got flooded last summer with the hurricane we had here on LI. It was converted into an apartment and the tenant got all her stuff out and in storage before we got hit. The water was up to the ceiling and everything had to be stripped down bare by a clean up crew who also treated everything to prevent mold. They even had to remove all the tiles and walls, ceilings, everything down to the beams. Refrig, stove, washing machine, dryer, everything was carted off. Then the contractors came in and rebuild the apartment from scratch. The tenant was able to move back in 3 months later. I think she said that her insurance only covered 20% of the damage. She will be paying off the loan for years. Even here in my apartment complex, they let everyone know that they are not responsible for any of our personal possessions if we get flooded. I am on ground level, with a 6'' step into my front door and the water stayed just under the jam. Lucky me, cause it sure looked like it was going to be coming into the door for a while there.
