Lol, feeding a Chi is such a treat...not....Miss Alice refused food when her
first owner bought her at 8 weeks so she was hand fed for a month. She knew her
second owner, the first's relative, so ate fine when she went to the second
owner. When I got her about 2 mos ago when she was 7 mos old she refused to eat
so I went to hand feeding as well. Not even canned food would get her eating
reliably. Now she has a pink dish with "diamonds" around it and eats in the
dog bed on the couch and occasionally in her crate. This way she has agreed to
eat. I read "Pups in a Teacup" and found out that many looong time dog owners
are baffled by the lack of if you are hungry you will eat survival instinct
missing in wee ones. And of course tiny pups can die from hypoglycemia. My
first toy Poodle had one episode when he was 9 weeks and I was 14 yrs old and
had fed him part of my sandwhich for lunch. He refused his food and collasped.
My parents rushed him to the vet and Karo or honey has lurked in my pantry ever
since. Yikes that is 40 yrs ago too. They do seem to prefer their dry moistened
with warm water which is how I feed. Alice won't eat a small or med Milk Bone
but will eat a piece of the large breed one, go figure. I always put a tiny
stuffed Kong in their crates for the 4 dogs under 10 lbs when I leave for work.
It might have p-nut butter, PURE pumpkin, dog food, tiny treats, canned food or
dental sticks or any combo of in it. I also freeze it when canned food, p-nut
butter or PURE pumpkin is used. I stuff med and large Kings to be stuck out of
sight for the rest who are left loose. I also always have Nutrical on hand.
