These numbers apply to a 50 Hz (cps) mains frequency. 2 poles in a 
synchronous motor should give a speed of 3000 rpm. So 1400 and 2800 
rpm are applicable to a asynchronous motor. Here in the Netherlands 
allmost all motors used in industry are asynchronous.
