gentlemen,

I did get the (main part of) the Slackware 4.0 in the mean time..
It was indeed a gnu-utility called wget that did the job. No big
surprise: it also runs in windows.. (well, there is a little thing
called CygWin isn't there :-)

I want to thank those who offered iso images of Slackware versions
in the 3.x range. I am currently running a Slackware 3.6 on the
machines, and that works just fine, except for a few irritating
things:

- The parallel port <-> CDROM interface refuses to work. It crashes
the system completely with 'Eeks: sched during <whatever>' messages
in an infinite loop. The ParIDE contraption is reported to be a
'backport' from the 2.2 kernels so i'm not greatly surprised..
- The kernel of the thing (2.0.35) is too old to support
my curiosity about Mosix (needs > 2.2 kernel)

The computer is a Compaq Contura 400 laptop (i486/50) with 8Mbytes RAM,
and ~800 Mbytes disk. As long as i keep far away from any very modern
Linux distro (does not fit on the disk :-) and ban any X11 code (idem,
plus X11 does not fit in the RAM), that is just fun to work with..

I hope that explains my very directed interest in the Slackware 4.0
distribution.. It's 2.2.6 kernel is modern enough to help me a little
further, and the olden-days distribution is (hopefully) still small
enough to fit on the above-mentioned computer.

thanks for the support,

Peter
