Mebbe I have a handle on it. I checked with Microchip, and explained the 
installation. It seems a pic a/d needs a minimum a/d reference of 2V, and I 
only have 1.2V :-(. I feel a hardware fiddle coming on, but I haven't time to 
check it yet. The software fiddle is highly unpalatable.
