Rhonn your attachment was stopped by the server.  You  didn't mention if the
unknown device has any resistance.  Since a capacitor wouldn't function with a
diode in series by elimination your unknown is either a current limiting
resistor or perhaps a zener in some sort of clipper or snubber network. Your
1N4148 is rated at 1A@ 200PIV.
