The PCB is not like I am used to seeing with copper there, it has what
looks like a graphite on top of the PCB.  This is not oxidized copper but
has some relief.  I did try cleaning it with a pink eraser but no joy.

A repair paint is sold, but I forget whose catalog I saw it in.  But before
spending money, try cleaning the traces first.  A pencil eraser will polish
em up.  They tend to oxidize and cause flaky behavior even if they look
clean.  This has restored most remotes I have worked on.
