I have tried many PCB tools in the past and ended up with Eagle. Whats good? It is very stable; with other tools I had many chrashes and headaches. The feedback to the developers and other users is very good. (news://news.cadsoft.de) Many PCB-houses in Europe are supporting the eagle format - just send in the pcb-file. No problems with wrong generated gerber files and more. It is running under Linux - very fast. The DRC (design rule check) is working good. I had no problems with my PCB's because of design failures (track or via distance), as with the other tools I used in the past (Orcad, Ultimate, Protel ... - I used this tools some years ago, maybe they are working better today). What's bad? The old user interface; but however, after some designs you have learnt how to do certain things, often there is only one way to do some things (read or ask in the cadsoft newsgroups). I do not use the autorouter - it is useful only with simple designs.
