I would make them let me watch as they installed and tested it. If it really does
work then it may be that your computer simply does not support that size memory
module. I have seen computers that supported 1,4 and 16 Mb SIMMS but did not support 8
Mb SIMMs. But the paperwork should tell you exactly what sizes are supported.

No, I haven't seen jumpers used for memory configuration since the IBM XT.

I haven't heard of them using jumpers in printers to prevent people from
upgrading them but they do use non-standard memory.
