It is probable that your computer(s) do not support the larger memory sizes.
The higher order address lines must be connected and the BIOS must be aware
that those addressing modes are used to successfully used the larger DIMMs.
Your best solution is to upgrade (replace) the mother board.

Gentlemen,
Two days ago my eldest Son purchased a 256K memory stick to upgrade from
the 128K he had in his computer. No matter what we try the computer will
only recognize 128K. We have tried the memory in three different computers
with the same results. He returned the memory to the store who tested the
memory in one of there computers and claimed it worked fine.

Does the memory card require jumpers to be present on the memory board to
tell some computers how much memory is mounted on the card?

This was common on older memory of a few years ago. HP made use of this to
stop people using generic memory in their printers.

Any help is appreciated.

Agree, The problem is missing (upper) memory address lines on the motherboard to the memory. The MB may specify higher memory range, that's because the chipset has more chipselects but are missing the upper address lines, due to RAM (chips) has evolved to much higher memory densities. Your MB only utilize half the space of every chip.

In short: There are probably only 8 chips on your RAM module. You need a module with 16 or more chip's to support 256MB

Hope it helps
