There is an application note from National Semiconductor that describes how
to make a computer mouse using one of their COP8 microcontrollers.  The
micro described has no special built-in RS-232 interface, and I'm sure that
you can strip useful information out that is relevant to interface to a PIC.
Go to the National website and do a search for "AN-681".
