The choice of SMPS topology and device will depend to a large part on the
rectified voltage across the filter.
which will be about 170 VDC in the US or twice that for Declan in Ireland.
Direct off-the-line switchers are common place. (As in about every PC in
the world). Armed with your filtered DC level I suggest going to the
following IC suppliers and search for suitable SMPS controllers.
TI Linear Tech Maxim for starters, there are others.
Finding a direct IC buck converter may be a bit difficult due to the high
voltage. The normal approach to this is to build a flyback converter
(ugh!!, transformer required :-( ) using a regular SMPS controller IC and an
external switching FET and flyback diode. (See www.irf.com)
Also, try an "off-the-shelf" "Universal Input" power supply. See
www.astrodyne.com ).
Depending on what kind of nonsense you are up to you may even be able to use
a cheap PC power supply. I think they are mostly "off-the-line" switchers
and may take DC inputs. You would have to check.
