My suggested rules: 1. Design or select sensor/instrument interface via differential pair whenever possible. For short distances or indoor use, ground-referenced single-ended sensors may be OK. 2. Tie shield to earth ground on both ends for short cable runs (<10 meters)and single-ended signals. 3. Tie shield to earth ground on the instrument side on long cable runs. In some cases grounding both ends will introduce ground loops because the instrument's ground may not be at the same potential as the sensor ground due to uneven ground moisture, etc. Use current-loop of differential pair for very noisy environments. -- Author: INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
