If that's _all_ you are doing, you might find much better results from
the 8pin or 16 pin uPs such as Atmel, Microchip, etc. That might cost
you arithmetic instructions, however. 

You would be surprised how much code is out there already for these.
I'm running linux, and got going with a programmer and gpl software. The
PICs have a good simulator running under linux, and I never figured out
the windows software - I found the linux stuff more intuitive. Others
will be the reverse, I presume. 

If you are looking at Microchip, try the PIC 18Fxx datasheets. They'ss
be flash programmable.
