What about adware?
I could not regain control of my work Windows 95
machine via the Start button. The adware mocked me
with questions like "are you sure you want to
de-install..". A white bar on the bottom of the screen
remained after the usual attempts to delete the SW.
Finally, I got into the C drive and guessed at which
files to delete. But probably some remnants of code
remain. Now performance is sluggish (shutting down is
problematic). And Norton or similar was de-activated,
I believe by the adware.
I've heard of Nuke or similar for adware. To another
(home) user I recommended a complete re-install of the
OS, but this is far more problematic on a Windows
machine than my usual Mac or Linux box. He has random
start-up issues on his Compaq. They haven't found the
problem.
