Is there a circuit drawing package where I can enter the components,
and then import a netlist?
That means entering the bits a second time. Is there a better/quicker
way out short of paying for the dongle?
I very much doubt if that would be practical.
If I understand your question you feed your new magic machine a board
to eat and it excretes a component list and net list ? Perhaps I've read to much Douglas Adams...
Then this is probably what you are looking for:

XCircuit version 3.2 Release Notes XCircuit-3.2 is considered the current, stable, official release version. XCircuit-3.2 is the also development version of XCircuit. Current work includes the integration of automatic schematic capture (ASG) with Stephen Frezza of Gannon University, and the ability of the schematic capture system to handle buses. This should keep us occupied for a while. The Automatic Schematic Capture (ASG) is currently disabled by default until it becomes stable enough to be considered usable. The first function to be added is an hspice parser that reads hspice files and generates schematics from the netlist. Future work includes automatically rerouting in response to moving objects around on the screen, and reading Verilog netlists. The ASG module can be enabled by specifying "--enable-asg" at configuration time. Currently, its main drawbacks are the tendency to exit the program when encountering bad or unknown input in the SPICE file, and crashing the program if run more than once. The ASG package is incorporated into revision 7 and later.
BTW Gannon U. is less than 100 miles from here, not that I had any immediate plans to go there but could if needed.
Xcircuit, eh? Linux based and all. :-)).
I have been keeping my head out of technical reading for too long. Spice I thoughtr was a simulation exercise.
I am not sure what sort of netlist I get, and am still on a steep learning curve with this beast, but early results
show very good potential.
Basically, whatever type of file I get out of it can be mangled by sed into an acceptable format, and fed in.
I will already have had to go through the exercise of entering components in approximate locations once, so a
second time isn't too bad. Nice to know it can be done. Excellent.
Don't bother the guys in Gannon Uni just yet. I'm still wrestling with stupid unknowns in this. What do you do
when the great oracle say "Attach 16 pin clip to IC8" and a stupid. clip gets in the way of doing so? It tells me what
to do presuming I'm an ex[pert user, but I'm a 'gobshite', if you'll pardon the expression :-).
Thanks
