Hello Declan, I found some references for the TLP555. The output appears to be a Schmidt trigger, according to 9.pdf, the LED current is as low as 1.6mA according to 83.pdf which then identifies the 5mA from 9.pdf as the max output current... However, the datasheet itself uses "normal" symbols for the electrical data, so it should not be too difficult to find a replacement.

Furthermore the TLP555 seems to be quite fast (5MBit/s), I don't know about the PC900 in this respect.
