Hello Declan,
I found some references for the TLP555. The output appears to be a
Schmidt trigger, according to 9.pdf, the LED current is as low as
1.6mA according to 83.pdf which then identifies the 5mA from 9.pdf as
the max output current...
However, the datasheet itself uses "normal" symbols for the electrical
data, so it should not be too difficult to find a replacement.
Thanks Uwe.
I didn't mean people to pull all the stops out on this one. It's testing I need the data for. Push Pull would be about right. They have it in a high side driver, along with an smps chip and two extremely small (8mm cubed) pulse tx. All driving a class B stage which is driving two high side static induction transistors
Looking at the application circuits, it seems to be push pull all right. I'll examine one in it's circuit, or pull one and test it, and report back. It's an excellent idea if that's what it is. The Japanese doesn't mean much to me.

This cross reference is not quite so optimistic: it says no cross for the TLP555 http://www.nuhorizons.com/products/cel/files/OptocouplerCross.pdf
The TLP555 apears to have a push-pull output, while the cited PC900 has an open-collector output. Furthermore the TLP555 seems to be quite fast (5MBit/s), I don't know about the PC900 in this respect.
Other fast Schmidt-trigger opto isolators would be HCPL2200 HCPL2231 HCPL2300 6N137 HCPL0600 HCPL2400 (check the pinouts....)
Uwe.
