The memory can be addressed as bytes or words as you stated, but you cannot change modes dynamically. They chose a weird way of naming the address pins but basically if you run the memory in word mode you use A0..Ax and data bits D0-D15. If you run the memory in byte mode you use A-1, A0.. Ax and data bits D0-D7. I guess no matter how you named the address pins it would probably confuse someone.
