MPSU60 comes into mind.

The MPSU60 is a PNP transistor with normal gain, however.

The MPSU60 has a TO-202 package, which might match your description. Color
splashes have been used to identify the hFE ranking of transistors.

I was unable to locate a datasheet of the MPSU60, but possible cross
references are
ECG240/NTE240 <http://www.nteinc.com/specs/100to199/pdf/nte191.pdf>
BF872 <http://www.promelec.ru/pdf/bf870_872.pdf>

These cross references were mentioned in
<http://www.ionpool.net/arcade/tech/uniwatt.html>

Stefan
