My first home computer was a TRS-80 and I also (later) used the trick that you mention: I wrote a program to read all of the data of a floppy (as separate files and directory information etc.) and send it via RS-232 to a Unix computer that would dump the files in it's own file system. That way I didn't need any knowledge of the file system of the TRS-80.
This might be OK for a few disks, but the time involved to setup the old machine, write a program, make a cable-connection and so on.. that's just not what they want.
I have finally found an expert for Versados, and he faxed me the necessary information (only four pages ;-)). Now I know that I wouldn't have had any chance trying to hack the format. "half" the documentation would have only confused, as the "secondary directory block" is first, and points to the "primary directory block". Well... did I use the word "weird" in this context?
Jaap: TRS-80 disks are supported by the Catweasel floppy controller - just in case you have more data to backup..
everyone else: Thanks for standing this off-topic discussion. I think we can close this topic now. If anyone is interested in the finished tool or the documentation, just drop me a mail - off-list!
