Since I love to experiment and I Love Linux, I just connected the Mic port to The TxD and RxD serial pins on a Raspberry Pi Zero W I had lying around and ran CHIRP on the Pi. This works because the underlying signal voltages used by the radio and the Pi are both 3.5V. The RaspBerry Pi Zero W, is roughly the same cost as the SCU-35 or an RT systems cable. Don't try this unless you like to tinker. If you do like to tinker, use a 2.5mm TRS plug. the "data" is on the ring and the GND is on the sleeve. connect "data" directly to the Pi's RxD and via a 2K resistor to the Pi's TxD. Connect the Pi's GND to the plug's GND. It works just fine.
My setup is now a bit more complicated. I now use the cheaper, smaller, more more powerful NanoPI Duo, and it supports CHIRP and Direwolf (packet radio) with a single more complicated cable, so I do not need switch cables to switch from CHIRP to Direwolf. Please don't try this yourself until I can get my act together and document this mess.
