Chuck, It seems you really want to convince me that monitors aren't expensive - I'm not sure why, since everything I've written is "+ monitor".
Yes, people can use their home TVs. Yes, older computer displays are abundant and in many cases freely available. Your first post said: "And for the price of a RPi 400 you just need to add a screen and you are off to the races..." You left out PS, mouse, hdmi cable & microSD card, and adding those to a $70 RPi 400 takes you close to the $100 mark I mentioned.
